Mainstream American media has reached another low in programming as this country continues to undo all the gains of the 1960’s and the Civil Rights Movement. As the Amos and Andy show and the Step and Fetch character, domestic images were the past images of Black America on the screen so are the images in today’s media. This is whether it be in entertainment or the news, images of Black America are always negative, down trodden, needing an missionary uplifting to civilization from mainstream America…. This includes media slanted images and/or reporting on Black males, ACORN, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, inner city neighborhoods… It feeds mainstream America’s false sense of superiority for their self-esteems. Self-esteem should never be based on others or the profits of mainstream media.
It is mainstream media in general. Americans have risen above the conformation of using this type of media as their only source. Americans have turned to cable, online programming, online choice of programing to watch, blog, and sites similar to Newsvine. There is hope.
When rap was just in the Black community its lyrics were of social issues, on living in America and being Black… Then mainstream entertainment became aware and rap became a genre of disgracing women, using derogatory terms for Black America by Black Americans and “gangsta.” It became another tool to feed the false sense of superiority that has become one of America’s divide and conquers. Robert Townsend created a movie, Hollywood Shuffle that comically depicting this longtime practice of mainstream media.
Mainstream news presents Black males as drug dealers, gang members, delinquent when it came to education, and faltering fathers. It is the new exploitation that was rampant in the movies of the 60’s and 70’s. One cannot father from prisons of the prison complex due to illegal racially bias drug laws. These laws were not created by minorities. One cannot father from prisons of the prison complex due to an education system made that fails minority youth. It prepares young Black males for prison by placing them in throw away schools and finds ways to damage their records. Mainstream news rarely presents information on the remaining 75% of Black males that are successful. With the program of this seed airing, it is a 400 year old status quo.
Has media gone too far?
